What’s the best first step when starting a coin collection?
I want to start collecting coins seriously but don’t know where to begin. Should I buy books first or is there a better modern approach?

The modern way is to start small and learn by doing. Get a few interesting coins, photograph them, and use an identification app to understand what you have. This gives you immediate knowledge and motivation to continue. Books are still useful later for deeper study.
