Marjorie Barretto Photo Scandal 73: A Case of Cyberbullying or Revenge?

Marjorie Barretto, a Filipina actress turned politician, was forced to admit that some scandalous nude photos doing the rounds online were really her. The photos, which showed her half-naked and posing provocatively, were allegedly leaked by an unnamed blogger who claimed to have more compromising images of the star.

Marjorie Barretto Breaks Silence on Photo Scandal 73

Barrettos lawyer, Lorna Kapunan, told Yahoo! Philippines OMG! that her client was suing the blogger for violation of the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act, which has been made into a law. According to the law, the culprit, when found guilty, must pay a fine of not less than P100,000 but not more than P500,000 and imprisoned for not less than three years.

Kapunan also said that Barretto had an idea on who posted the offending photo, but didnt want to talk about it for now. The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) was set to find out who the source of the photo was. Kapunan added that this would be a test for the Anti-Photo and Video Voyeurism Act since nobody had filed a case for violation of the said law until Barrettos case came up.

Barrettos main concern, according to Kapunan, was her five children, who were exposed to online media at a very early age. Kapunan also revealed that Barretto thought the photo scandal had nothing to do with the ongoing Barretto family feud. She is the most quiet of the Barrettos. She has not sided with anyone and she has not made any public pronouncement about the fight between the two siblings (Gretchen and Claudine), Kapunan explained.

But what was the motive behind the photo scandal? Was it a case of cyberbullying or revenge? Some speculated that it was a way of tarnishing Barrettos reputation as a politician and a mother. Others suggested that it was a personal vendetta by someone who had a grudge against her. Whatever the reason, it was clear that Barretto was a victim of an invasion of privacy and a violation of human dignity.

Barrettos photo scandal was not the first nor the last in Philippine showbiz. Many celebrities have fallen prey to hackers, blackmailers or disgruntled ex-lovers who have exposed their intimate photos or videos online. Some have denied their authenticity, while others have admitted their mistakes and moved on. But no matter how they handled it, they all suffered from humiliation and trauma.

The lesson here is that everyone should be careful about what they share online, especially when it comes to sensitive or personal information. Once something is uploaded on the internet, it can be accessed by anyone and used for malicious purposes. It is also important to respect other peoples privacy and dignity and not spread or consume such materials that can harm them or others.
